Did your mum take you to your first Karate class?
This was not my case, but I know a lot of mothers that initiated their kids in The Way of Budo. I heard a multiple Jiu Jitsu champion tell once how his mother took him to the Dojo to help him learn to defend himself against bullies. She helped him not only defend himself but to suceed in life and live from his passion.
Did something like this happen to you?
Maybe your mum did not initiate you in Martial Arts, but she took you to the Dojo for years. Our friend Clint tells us that his mom, Elizabeth, always supported his martial "madness".
Another of our many FB friends, Miesha, is a Martial Mum. She shared with us how she studied martial arts for at least 14 years with his brother. They now both have kids and they work to pass it on to the next generation.
This is similar to Amy, which is a black belt on Okinawan Shorin-ryu Shidokan Karate, and both her boys train under her.
Debbie had a Sensei Dad, and so did my partner Lou from Shihan Essence who trained with his brother under their father for decades, on Goju-Ryu Karate.
My Mom died when I was 5 years old. Martial Arts saved and empowered my life, but also gave me a code of conduct that I am sure would have made my her proud.
It is for all these reasons we want to celebrate Mother's Day with all of you, and send our love to all Martial Mums, and all Mums because they just rock!
Finally, as our FB friend Diane stated: If you don't have a Sensei Mum... be one!!!
